Izmir - Izmir Highlights

Daily Program

Izmir is Turkey’s third largest city and its major port on the Aegean Sea. According to ancient documents, it was Ionian Smyrna which was the birthplace of Homer, the author of the epic of Troy. The Mount Pagus rises above the city centre and you can enjoy the panoramic views of the city and Bay of Izmir from the walls of Kadifekale, an ancient fortress built by Alexander the Great. The tour continues to the Archeology Museum. Then visit the city’s symbol, the ottoman Clock Tower, built in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Emperor Abdulhamit II’s accession to the throne. The clock itself was a gift of Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany. Then you will enjoy the Konak Camii, the small but ornate 18th century mosque. Finally penetrate the Kemeralti, Izmir’s historical bazaar district, a maze of narrow streets.
