Corfu - Achillion & Old Corfu Town

Depart the port for a ride to Gastouri village where the Achillion Palace stands. It was built by the Queen of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Elizabeth, better known as Sissy, at the end of the 19^th century. The palace was bought by the Kaiser William II of Germany after her assassination. During the First and Second World Wars, the condition of the Achilleion Palace deteriorated as it was used as headquarters and hospital for the occupation forces. During the 1960s, however, the palace was leased to foreign companies that restored the building and brought back a lot of the artifacts that were lost during wartime. Today, the beautiful gardens of the palace, full of exotic flowers and with imposing figures of Achilles dominating the center, offer magnificent views of the Ionian Sea. 

 

Moving along the coastal road of Perama, a short stop to take photographs of the famous views of the Mouse Island will be made before returning to Corfu town.  Once you arrive at Corfu Town, you leave your vehicle at the Esplanade, the main square of the town, for a beautiful walk through the picturesque streets of the Old Town where your guide will provide commentary as you pass the Residence of the British High Commissioner, the Venetian quarters of Cambiello and Corfu's historical center with the Town Hall. You will then visit the Church of St. Spyridon, Patron Saint of Corfu. You can either board your vehicle to return to the ship at the end of the tour or, time permitting, remain in the town to spend some more leisure time to later go back to the ship independently.
